Let The Web Point At You

I have been following Victoria Ipri for quite a while now.  One very smart lady and a super copy writer.

I got a message from her today about something that to me was an eye opener in some ways, but not totally surprising.

It was in regards to marketing and the findings of the "RainToday’s 2009 Benchmark Report, How Clients Buy"

When you go to Victoria's blog you are going to see some fantastic content, but on this particular post you are going to see the Top 10 ways Buyers find Service Providers.

Regardless of what type of business you are in whether it be as a blog owner or an affiliate marker, it helps to understand the dynamics of how people (buyers) find what they are looking for when on the internet.

As Victoria asks.. what surprises you about these finding and how will you integrate these findings in your own marketing plan?

I found it interesting how the people responded to her post.  It helps to pay attention not only to the posts you read, but also the comments as they can provide valuable insights.

Enjoy,

@blogneta

Anyone trying to Market anything should check out the information Diane has provided here. Victoria publishes very interesting and informative articles (posts) that I found easy to read and understand. While reading the information Victoria has on her blog, pay attention to how her articles (posts) are written as well as the comments as Diane stated.

I always try to look at everything I see or read from as many different angles as possible. Try to see how the author wrote the article and what response they were expecting..... and if their approach worked. Also look at it from the side most people will, the consumer side. Does it interest you? Could you see what the author was trying to get across? What conclusion did the article bring you to? Did it match what the author was shooting for?

By looking at articles in different ways, it will be easier to think of conversations you can start with the author by adding your comment.
TIP! An interesting conversation about a blog post is one of the fastest ways to get seen online if your signature is done correctly! (not spam)

Good evening Scott:

i can understand why, people to some degree have issues with making comments. One of the biggest problems that i can see is many are told...Post Comments...come on folks... do this or that. All too often people are also told, if you post comments, then you will get noticed. Its a lot of work by the way to do this kind of "gaining credibility/visibility" and for many because we live in a world of instant gratification, people don't see any difference - fast enough.

Gaining your authority takes time and effort, no doubt, but not as slow as you might think.

So how do you make comments, other than the typical.. "hey great post" ( which by the way is a great way to get yourself deleted)

Simple!

Simple she says...ya right!

I had a student a while back, who by the way said those very words. We were talking on Skype about different ways to do things. LOl here she was talking a mile a minute, not by voice, but in type. I let her just keep talking and you have to keep in mind, i was laughing myself silly. When I said that to her, she said why are you laughing? I replied back, well its like this, here we are talking in a type interface, you have been talking up a storm without even thinking..correct? She said ya..so? I said..well you see it is like this, that is how to make comments on a blog. Don't think of comments as this major literary piece, pretend you are talking on Skype and just go for it. Hold that in your mind when you visit a blog. She was quiet for a while and she came back...well wont mention some of the words here...lol...but it was like a light bulb went on. She now is commenting up a storm and is having a great time. Lesson to be learned? Don't think ...just do, but keep in your mind an imagery.

The other important issue is because everyone is taught to comment on every blog they come across, a lot of people are making a big mistake. The mistake being..commenting on blogs that you have no interest in, have no idea what the people are talking about or are not within your niche. The old adage of speak to what you know and know what you are speaking to is the rule of the day.

As for signatures...well Scott... that is a post to itself.

Thanks for the feedback, as always great talking to ya ;-)

Why thank you Diane for making this so easy to understand!
The backwards marketing being promoted out there for so long has made every way that will easily get you seen on the internet into a J.O.B. ! It should be fun to read your favorite blogs and engage in a conversation that may be seen by millions! The backwards marketing has us all selling them, and we know nothing about them! (If we did, we wouldn't be selling them!) Therefore we can not have fun blogging! We do Not know what to say because we are programed to think we should be selling them......

I have tried to de-brief people with my posts, live webinares, and articles, but they turn and run back to "them"! "My way is to slow".... and they are not instantly gratified.... The kicker is, when they leave, they are in a much better position to actually succeed online and never see it! They leave everything they have built to try the next fad! This shouldn't bother me because I get their work for free and benefit from the web presence they built. But it does! Because all I wanted to do was help them succeed at what they were trying to do!

Anyway... It is all pretty simple once you see through the crap everyone throws at you.
Don't market the product, market you (Branding)
You will make more targeted internet traffic for free by talking about what you like and know about than anything else on the web will. No Matter the media, and that makes it fun!
A product will not make you money, Customers will...
A pay plan usually means a complicated way to scam you into making money for someone else.....
If you don't say anything on the internet, no one will find you......
A line of Bull will get you a barn full of flies.....
You need more????

I used to do what you are doing Scott, trying to convince people to stop what they are doing. As you know i tend to think in analogies. I came up with some pretty darn good ones by the way. Nothing worked, not really, but boy those analogies kept me going...lol

What i realized was that there are two kinds of people the marketers and the bloggers.

When a person is blogging they are looking at a long term big picture. They write content, because they just love what they are doing. Over time, because it is human nature, they find ways and means to "harmonize" on their blogs to create that extra income. They look to other bloggers who interest them and they just naturally gravitate towards these people.

To me, marketers for the most part stay within set parameters and end up marketing to themselves. It is only recently that with the advent of the Web 2.0, that they discovered social communities and have learned how to use those mediums to ply their trade.

What i find interesting is that there is room for the two groups to learn from each other. The bloggers need to learn good marketing techniques to get their readership up. The marketers could stand learning from the bloggers in learning how to write and therefore creating a good solid base list.

Just thought I would say my thoughts on that :-)

What i find alarming is that for the most part, you will find marketers going from one program to another and anther without rhyme or reason. why? Because this is what they were taught to do and they pass it on to others. scary thought!

Anyways, I don't wish to do a rant. My point is..I stopped thinking of trying to convince people. This may sound harsh, but my time is better spent on talking to those few and teaching them good skills to further themselves, than running around saying STOP!

I think that it is through the conversations we are having, which by the way could be done in a chat, is more worthy in the end. Quite simply, if people are really interested they will see what we are talking about on the net, through searches.

Just think.... if they find you Scott, then you will have already convinced them to learn something new..kewl huh?

Well..... I didn't mean to tell people what to do...
1. I know I can't change anybody, they are the only ones that can...
2. It was late and I was tired so I probably ran off subject a little
3. The marketers are driving the social communities quiet (but wouldn't if they marketed properly)
4. How do we capture the interest of these marketers so we can actually help them move towards success?
5. Our conversation here is indexed publicly and member viewable so anyone can learn from it or join in and voice their opinions.
6. Yes, it is the coolest! And they will be showing up!

Thank you Diane for your views

Diane, thanks so much for following me and for promoting my post! And it's great to find you here on this blog. I absolutely agree with you that the comments can be more revealing than the post itself. In reply to both you and Scott, I always write with a view to my readers- what they want to know, how they can use the information, how the information will benefit them as new or struggling copywriters (since that's my niche), and how I can stimulate conversation. I agree with you both that people can be shy to comment. Sometimes, I think it's a fear of being judged. Before I began blogging, I was concerned that I might not come off as knowledgeable, or that others were smarter and had more to say. The truth is that people are hungry for information...that's why my new mantra is "I don't want to get rich. I want to get real." With so much hype in the copywriting industry, (and others), people find it refreshing to get accurate, honest information from someone who's been there. In 2010, it's all about transparency and authenticity!

Victoria, I hope our members see the value of your writing and join in conversation with you. Be sure to keep us informed of your activity.

I agree people are in fear of being judged when commenting or maybe just afraid of the unknown. I for one would love questions and comments I could answer on every post, not in judgment, but instead try to help people understand my viewpoints. With what I see posted on Twitter and Facebook. Why should they worry?

My opinion is, "If you get real. You will probably be the one getting rich." I too believe people are feed up with the hype and lies. The search engines are also moving in a direction which will bring out the people that are not afraid to write original copy (even if they are not great writers) and converse in intelligent "comments" about that copy, even if one thinks it might make them look less knowledgeable. The few people who "get real" on their blogs this year will see a surge of organic traffic.

So true, Scott. As I pointed out in my latest blog post, "Keep Talking About Me. You're Just Making Me More Famous", it's mastering the two-way conversation that keeps things real these days. There are lots of tools to help, thank goodness, or none of us would ever get anything else done! It's all about organic traffic in 2010...there is no excuse why every single website owner shouldn't be successful in his or her niche by following some simple, but tried-and-true, rules of engagement.

Here is a thought I just had.... Do you think people may not think they have the time to read an article or post thoroughly and leave an intelligent comment? Everything is such a hurry these days.

Good Morning everyone.

I read something today that had and impact on me and is very pertinent to this conversation. It was a tweet ( i am becoming a twitterholic...yikes): "RT @lksugarman It includes teaching that "social media" is an extension of human experience, not a replacement." While i have not had the time to trace this tweet back to the original post (yet) I think what it says is important to the blogging experience, the totality of the net experience in that what we do when we are copyrighting, blogging, commenting, forums or anything else you can imagine, its all about the extension of the human experience.

Thanks to you both for your insights and to me you have added more value to my "human experience".

Here is a question to you both, it is important that we try to reason the problems of people talking, now how about ideas to help people solve this issue. How do we get the message across in such a way that people will want to reach out via blogs, forums and communities?

Reply to This

Diane, people generally will engage when they feel motivated to do so. It's our job to motivate them! It's our job to listen to what people want, and answer that need with the right products, services and information. It's all about authenticity, transparency, honesty...and consumers have become so savvy, B.S. and hype simply won't survive. If we want people to reach out, we've got to reach out. And it is imperative to participate in social media, because that's where the people are!

Victoria, what a pleasure it is talking to you. I have been so fortunate to see you at work with BlogNet Awards and what you are telling people here as well as Facebook, Plaxo and with your wonderful blog The Confident Copywriter just goes to show that with honesty and transparency, people can and will not only listen, but more important want to engage in conversing and participating.

When I made the comment earlier today, in a way I was coming from a position of frustration. It does not happen often thank goodness, but when it does, it sure can grip me.

As you might recall, I do a lot of researching for our sites as well as so many other things ( a long list to be sure), but I still take time to talk to those who are wanting to create that income that many are wanting to achieve.

Case in point is a person, who has been affiliate marketing and I have to be honest they suck at it and even worse this person is like so many who come onto the net and keep jumping from program to program without thought or reason , all for naught. I have dealt with so many of these people and they are so kewl, but so locked into a mindset that things have to be done a certain way..copy and paste ads everywhere. It happens that this person is also a very good musician and so I have been trying to get this person to understand that maybe they need to rethink what they are doing and why.

This person as Scott has pointed out in a comment is afraid of being judged and not being good enough, they are afraid to talk about what they love and know the best. It is truly a shame. So figuring out how to reach people that talking with authenticity, with honesty , with their own passion is not as easy as it seems.

The social media landscape is just so awesome, because if we use the K.I.S.S philosophy, mixed with the right tools and yes learning, then I know for a fact that people can succeed. This is my goal and I know it is Scott's goal, your goal, Tim's goal and many others.

It is through conversations like this, if people will take the time to read and think about what they are doing, that we can reach out and help others.

Oh dear this became a wee bit of a long reply to you....ooos...lol

All I will say is thanks Victoria and to you Scott, for keeping the light burning so that others can learn and feel good about what they are doing.

Many thanks and Best Regards,

@blogneta
