Let The Web Point At You

As a few of you.....anyone out there?  lol  know Scott Reynolds  and I have been having an ongoing discussion on a different thread about such things as twitter, the "dreaded" list as well as  being burned with affiliate  marketing and I should add, multi level marketing ( there is a distinct difference by the way)

Scott and myself (as well as others I am sure) question the aspect of list building as well as the whole concept (?) of being an affiliate or promoting affiliate products or services in general.

I think that as owners or in the administrative part of businesses, we have fallen down on our job in some regards and we need to smarten up!

In this current  economic climate, it seems that we the owners require of our affiliates a bachelorette, an instant messalogy, and a masters degree in social networkology and if we are honest we expect our affiliates if they are females a doctorate in flirtation and from our males  the "hawkers" mentality of sell sell sell.   I think it is way overdue that we as owners teach the affiliates to be knowledgeable in the many different areas of the industry and put the well being and even the financial responsibilities at the forefront of their many obligations.  Its all about people and its all about having a conscience and the moral ethics to build a good relationship with our front line workers.

Many of the affiliates that we are talking to have been so burned by the business of affiliate marketing as well as having been indoctrinated to do as they do, without thought.. that as Scott said to me, everyone is running away.  Where does the fault lie?    As owners we need to take some responsibility in what we are doing or have done and as people who want to make that extra income, they need to stop and examine what they are doing, the whys and the hows.

It is so easy to get sucked into that next pie in the sky and it is easy to fall into the statistical trap of..if we promote this or that....if we get a thousand people on a list...then surely I will make the money!  WRONG!

As you can see by the subject line of this thread - How Did You Score?  I have come across a quiz that I think will prove useful to many ( or at least that is my hope). To start turning things around, we need to start using some common sense  and to also learn about the business of marketing. I invite you to take this quiz and see how you did, there really are no winners or losers in this quiz, just a way to maybe start thinking things in a different way.

I would love your feed back.  Share how you did and maybe even tell others to come here and take the quiz for themselves.

READY?

1.

You are approached online by a very chatty fellow who apparently can barely stop jumping around  about some e-book hes just discovered. ” Its full of SO much helpful and INTERESTING information on making money online that, instead of going out and doing whatever it was that he read in the e-book that’s making him practically p** in his pants, he instead decided to go out and completely waste his own time by looking for newbie  strangers who look to need a helping hand.

He claims that he can get you this incredible piece of e-book material for but a mere $60.00 since he knows a guy, that knew a guy… or something  blah, blah, blah. On the other hand, you were about to drop that $300 on a campaign you'd been researching and tweaking up until launch time. You figure that the e-book this guy’s talking about HAS to be good with the way hes been going on. Either that or he just had too much coffee or something…

Balls in your court, champ. What do you do?

A. Roll the dice and spend your $60 on this once-in-a-lifetime e-book that you've been bombarded with so much information about.

B. Tell him he can take his e-book on how to sign up for an account with Adwords and shove it  ..where?

C. Inform him that you're going to need some time to mull over the decision, but that hes welcome to stick around and tell you more about the e-book. Because that would be a GREAT idea!

During your present quest to trek through the mean streets of an affiliate marketing chat room, you are presented with a link to what SEEMS like it is just meant to help you out. Apparently its to a website that teaches you all about web SEO in a university type setup online! At least that what some random stranger has told you, complete with several smiley faces after each of his statements. The link is right there in front of you. What do you do?

A. Seek safe haven at this… Web SE University place.

B. Ignore it and continue asking EVERYONE why they think your Wordpress hosted Adsense account was banned.

C. Get off of everyone's case and go actually try your hand in some actual affiliate marketing.

3.

For whatever reason, a particularly agitated message board member  has decided to absolutely go OFF on you as if he were participating in some live and officiated debate about how PPC is better than the “garbage” SEO that you’ve been trying out. While you were originally going to just walk (or scroll) away, he definitely struck a deep nerve when he called SEO garbage.

That Jerk! What do you do?

A. Be thankful you've finally found someone to give you some guidance  even if that guidance was the complete opposite of everything you’ve known and was also insulting and degrading.

B. Get back to work because arguing over the Internet is like arguing in to a mirror. Arguing on the Internet is dumb! Yeah!

C. Take it one step farther and make a post on the message board forum telling everyone what he did to you and that you’re NOT pleased with what he’s done.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

4.

What do the following words mean to you (if anything): ˜tracking˜ and ˜testing˜?

A. Everything

B. Why did my Adsense account get banned?

C. They are two of the Ts in the Quadruple T Philosophy line of Internet marketing strategy

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

5.

Max is split-testing a PPC campaign with 42 different Ad groups which all contain 23 different keywords except for one which actually contains 17. Now, REALLY quickly and WITHOUT using a calculator, which of the following numbers is closest to how many total keywords Zack has in his campaign as a whole?

A. 1,000

B. 875

C. 450

D  0

That wasn't that bad was it? Its not like you aren't going to lie about your score if you fail.  It means you are on the road to maybe finding out how to do things properly and inst that what it is all about?

Answer/Moral Analysis:

Since I’m pretty sure we all know the right and wrong answers in the questions, let’s instead take a look at the morals that you were being taught through these somewhat exaggerated real-life examples.

But first, just in case you were wondering, here’s the correct answers:

1. B

2. C

3. B

4. A

5. D

The moral of Question #1:

Don’t talk to shady strangers trying to sell you things. It will never end well.  On social communities, develop relationships FIRST.

The moral of Question #2:

Doing ANYTHING with someone you don’t know at ALL is risky, do you really think you should be clicking links too?  Learn everything there is to know before you do anything.  Ask questions and do your homework.

The moral of Question #3:

Time = Money

Time spent arguing = Wasted time

Wasted Time = No Money

No Money = :(

The moral of Question #4:

If you don’t know what testing and tracking refer to then, you best go find out. Because they’re very important indeed!

The moral of Question #5:
Make sure you read things carefully. You never know what the end result will be if you don’t. Knowledge is indeed POWER.

Wow...Diane, You are right, I can say for sure I did not know anything about any of the 4 steps you mentioned. I am hoping I have a small clue now. My blog turns 1 month old tomorrow! Yay!! LOL. I do know a bit more know then I did. Thanks mostly to Scott. I feel he knows what he is talking about and genuinely cares, so...I take his word. I will do whatever he says will help my business. At first, I was a bit standoffish, but I came around. I am really glad you are here too. I really enjoy reading your posts. I feel you might also be someone I can trust.

After reading everything posted, I realize I need to work on my profile. I have been a bit guarded, but you are right, people are looking for a connection. I am going to try and "warm" up my online personality.

OK, I am scared to ask, but what did you think of my blog? I really want your honest opinion, I just ask that if it is going to be hard to read please send me a private message. LOL!!

Talking dept??? Great!!! Sorry I couldn't stay up with you last night. I have 2 babies under 3 who demand my attention at 7am.

Good morning Angie :-)

if you noted the image i put on here, lol...that is me right now... long night!
I will message you in a pm in a short while...K?

For a person who just started a blog one month ago and now have 45 readers, girl I have to say..way to go!

You are doing what most never achieve. That is not to be taken lightly.

When blogging we desire and NEED the readers for a few reasons...one it makes you feel good ( its ok to say that by the way) . The more readers you have the more viral your blog can become and thus you are getting the attention you are needing to be able to create that income you are wanting.

It is perfectly normal to be guarded or a bit scared, but the whole purpose to having your blog is to create that business for yourself. Maybe instead of looking at those 45 people as "readers", look at them as potential customers. I would much rather have 45 customers than 100 people looking and walking away...its a bit of a mind set...or attitude adjustment?

Good grief i could just go on and on ...about all the ways and means, the possibilities and the pure satisfaction of knowing that you are doing something you love and making money at it...what a rush!

needing a coffee, do a few things and then i will message you...honest

Thanks Angie, Congrats on your new website! (Of course you realize you just started at the very bottom of the website barrel with "0" traffic) But it is easy to leap out of there!
You said "I am very new to this and my mind is literally jumbled with so much info I am not sure if I have actually learned anything or not" .... which got my attention. I remember feeling the same way. The previous generation of internet and internet marketers baffled us with bull so bad we thought the only way to make it was to follow them!

I am a mechanic and like to find out how things work....... with lots of help from friends I found online like Diane and Tim, and tireless work from me... pant - pant.... whew! ... breaking a sweat here.... lol (I also may try to be funny once in a while) I found out that most of that info I had soaked up was bull!
The simpler the better Angie! Just put interesting and informative information on your websites and profiles. This builds your "web presence" or online real estate. The bigger your house, the easier it is to see. But if people see it and find it is not what it seems when they get there.... you just lost them and their friends forever!
Tip! Brand yourself. Then when your interests or products change all the work you have done will still work for you. How? Basically just make friends.... and make sure the info you put on the web lets newcomers know why they should want to be your friend. I know... simple sounds complicated.....

Start simple and easy on your new website, posting new info on a regular basis, you can work outward from there

Hi Scott, sorry I had to get to bed. I have 2 young babies (both under 3) that demand my alert, undivided attention at 7am. I understand. All of a sudden it hit me. My blog has on average 45 readers. I think that is prettyt good. It willl be a month old on the 8th,uhhh,tomorrow! Right now I am just getting the word out while also updating my blog daily. I definitly see it paying off. Right now I am trying to figure out another type of blog I would like to have. I have been doing a bit of "soul searching" I think the I am scared, yes, I can admit it!! I am scared to right a blog about something that really means something to me and have no one come! LOL. I know that sounds silly but with a site about freebies, it is easy to "sell" people want free stuff, and even if they don't it doesn't bother me. Oh, well, I need to get past it. I know at least you and Diane will come, right?? LOL!!

One thing I do need to work on is my profile. I have been a bit guarded about letting everyone know who I am. Not sure why, I guess I am just naturally guarded. Hmmm, that is a whole other discussion. hahaha...

Well, anyways I really appreciate the support you have shown me Scott. This is my favorite ?? site. I don't really know what "type" of site this is. That's funny. I would like to post a badge or banner from your site on mine. I get alot of readers that also have blogs. I will look for that next. Thanks again!!

Never be sorry for going to bed! I will have to learn that trick someday.... LOL

45 readers in a month? That is more than most people get in a year! Not bad for a newbie!

People are afraid of their "onlineness" (new word of the day.... lol) I have been online for years plastering my personal stuff all over the place and never had a problem yet!

If you plan on marketing.... you had better put yourself out there! Your customers will not buy from someone they do not trust (or sometimes you can win their trust by posting on a site that has trusting customers? hint -hint) I get a real kick out of the people that say they are so successful online and never post a thing about who they are.... lol Or the ones that never put their real name on anything (probably so no one can find them and beat the crap outa them!) then cry because they get no customers..... awe....... lol

Diane is a good friend to have around... just be careful when you get her started... lol

Boy I am doing a great job aren't I! You don't even know what kind of site this is! lol This is a social community based on getting website traffic, mostly for internet marketers. The badge is listed in the sidebar on every page, just click it to get the code, you can put them just about anywhere.

Reply to This

Ok, I actually knew that. I just didn't know how to put it into words!! LOL. You are doing a great job. I am still laughing. I have seen the badge at least 50 times. I will put it on my site later today. Ok, new lesson for me, no posting after 10pm or before I have had at least 3 cups of coffee. You probally think I am a total airhead!! (still laughing!!!)

Reply to This

Airhead? heck NO! you are one of those people that is a joy t meet. Someone who is not afraid to ask questions and seek answers. I cant speak for Scott, but have a feeling he will agree....you make our day!

Far too often we meet those who are so.. how to say, indoctrinated, jaded, that getting through to them is a challenging task.

There are many social communities on the net. On this platform ( NING) there are over half a million social networks alone. Keep in mind that some networks may only have 10 members or as in such places as Facebook you are looking at thousands.

The trick is to find those communities that will help you with visibility and that you will actually remember to go to. You have no idea how many i belong to ... another lesson to learn...dont join more communities that you can reasonably be active in. Keyword...being active..that is what it is all about...branding YOU as an authority figure in whatever you are doing...

tada!'

um coffee...sigh...yep i need one...lol still looking at your site ...not forgotten
